What makes recessed lighting so difficult?
Before installing recessed light, you need to know if the existing circuit wiring will handle the additional load and function properly.
Most recessed lights carry a load of 60 watts or more. The wattage can add up easily, which may overload the electrical circuit. So adding the light bulb wattage is the first wise step to calculate the new load. Then, add the total existing load.
You’ll also need to think about what effect you want from the lighting:
- Is it downlight where lights spread down for functionality, such as in the kitchen area or working space?
- What objects or areas should be highlighted? How are you going to go about light overlapping for maximum effect to provide ambient light without a glare?
- Is there a certain space that needs bright light for reading if recessed light install in bedroom, or is there an area that needs soft light for relaxing?
- What is the electrical material you are going to use: 3", 4”, 5”, 6" new construction/remodel IC Recessed Light Housing, or non IC Housing.
- How about the recessed trim? If you are cutting a hole in the ceiling, is the hole the proper size and shape? Is the can light going to be installed properly, or improperly leaving gaps around the hole and not fitting flush with the ceiling?
- Are the recessed lights UL rated for safety?
- And, did you make sure that the lights won’t be installed around insulation which would be a fire hazard?
- If you want a dimmer switch to work with your recessed lights, will it work with the particular bulbs you’ll be using?
Installing and wiring recessed lighting is a challenge that many people think they can handle. Installing conventional light fixtures does involve some of these same questions, but recessed lighting is more difficult to install simply because of the labor and expertise involved in actual creating the recessed area. Yet there is no doubt that recessed lighting is attractive and functional.
For home theater rooms, recessed lighting is a great way to add extra light over countertops or islands, in bathrooms, recessed lights add soft lights over garden tubs or spa showers.
There’s no better way to display a painting than with a recessed light placed directly over the painting. It provides light on the art work but doesn’t shine directly on it, creating professional display.
