When working around the house or office, it is essential to understand how the electrical system works to ensure safety and protect yourself from potential shock or electrocution.
Here are a few electrical safety tips:
- The main circuit breaker must be off when cleaning chandeliers or ceiling light fixtures.
- Always use manufacturer recommended light bulbs, not a higher-watt bulb in your light fixtures. Higher wattage bulbs can burn up the light fixture’s wiring, leading to a fire hazard.
- Never cut the extension cord's male or female plug to hardwire equipment as extension cords are rated for use in free air. They are meant to be a temporary, not permanent solution for wiring. Do not use extension cords on a continual basis.
- Never overload extension cords. Most cords are ampere and voltage rated. If you have six receptacles, this doesn’t mean you should plug something into every one.
- Make sure the items plugged into an extension cord do not exceed the extension cord rating -- a specific number of watts.
- If there is electricity, doesn't necessary work right and safe; flickering lights, outlets, loose wall outlets, bulbs that blow out all the time, circuit breaker trips frequently are all signs of safety problems.
All of these are sign of electrical problems. If these problems are not troubleshooted and repaired by a licensed electrician, they can lead to electrical dangers or more serious problems, such as improper electrical wiring or poor grounding.
Be alert for the smell of burning rubber or plastic or the sound of sizzling or humming coming from electrical components. Know the location of the breaker panel and the main shut-off to the electrical system.
Well-trained electricians will label the control panel to identify each circuit breaker’s circuit. The main shut-off may be located outside at the meter base or in the garage or in the closet.
Finally remember, if you are handy man, it does not mean you are a licensed electrician!
